The Prairie provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba boast a combined population of 6 million people with more than half living in urban areas. Of that total, only 34% are protestant Christians.
Historically, a largely agrarian population was scattered on farms and communities across the prairies. Today, agriculture has declined in relative importance. Economic opportunities attract a large number of skilled workers who immigrate to the Prairie provinces, creating multicultural communities. Prairie communities, each with their own cultural heritages, languages, practices and beliefs, are a challenging environment for church planting to connect with the needs of the diverse communities.
Recent census reports reveal that Calgary, Edmonton, Regina and Saskatoon have experienced some of the fastest growth of cities in Canada.
